UK Health and Care Worker Visa 2026: A Complete Guide for UAE Applicants
The UK continues to offer career opportunities for qualified nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals. However, significant immigration changes introduced in 2025 and 2026 have created confusion among applicants, particularly those working in the UAE.
The most important distinction is that qualified nurses and eligible healthcare professionals can still apply for the UK Health and Care Worker Visa from outside the country. New overseas applications for care worker and senior care worker positions, however, are no longer accepted.
This guide explains the current eligibility requirements, costs, English language rules, and application process for UAE-based healthcare professionals planning to work in the UK.
Is the UK Health and Care Worker Visa Open in 2026?
Yes, but eligibility depends on the type of healthcare position.

From 22 July 2025, the UK stopped accepting new overseas applications for care workers under occupation code 6135 and senior care workers under code 6136.
This means a care assistant living in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or another location outside the UK cannot apply for this route based on a new care worker job offer.
A temporary in-country arrangement remains available for certain people already legally present and working in the UK. Eligible applicants may be able to switch into a care worker role until 22 July 2028, subject to specific conditions.
Who Can Apply From the UAE?
A UAE-based applicant must normally meet all the following conditions:
- Be qualified for an eligible healthcare occupation
- Have a confirmed job offer from an approved UK employer
- Receive a valid Certificate of Sponsorship
- Meet the salary requirement for the occupation
- Demonstrate the required level of English
- Hold any professional registration required for the position
- Provide the necessary financial and supporting documents
The job title alone does not determine eligibility. The occupation code assigned to the position must also be eligible under the Health and Care Worker route.
Applicants should confirm the occupation code, salary and employer’s sponsor status before accepting an offer or paying any recruitment-related charges.
English Language Requirement in 2026
The English language requirement changed on 8 January 2026.
New Health and Care Worker Visa applicants must generally demonstrate English ability at CEFR level B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Applicants may meet this requirement through:
- An approved Secure English Language Test
- A degree awarded by a UK institution
- An overseas degree taught in English and assessed by Ecctis
- An English assessment accepted by the relevant UK professional regulator
Applicants who already held this visa before 8 January 2026 and are extending or updating it may remain subject to the previous B1 requirement.
NMC Registration for Overseas Nurses
Nurses and midwives trained outside the UK must satisfy the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s registration requirements.
The NMC registration process is separate from the visa application. Having a DHA, DOH or MOH licence in the UAE does not automatically authorise a nurse to practise in the UK.
The process may include:
- Completing the NMC eligibility and qualification assessment
- Providing evidence of professional qualifications
- Meeting the NMC English language requirement
- Passing the Computer-Based Test
- Passing the Objective Structured Clinical Examination
- Completing identity, health and character verification
The NMC currently accepts IELTS Academic and OET as English language evidence.
The required IELTS Academic scores are:
- Listening: 7
- Reading: 7
- Writing: 6.5
- Speaking: 7
For OET, applicants generally need:
- Listening: B
- Reading: B
- Writing: C+
- Speaking: B
The NMC allows qualifying scores to be combined across two sittings when its conditions are satisfied.
Salary Requirement
Health and Care Worker Visa applicants must normally be paid at least £25,000 per year or the applicable going rate for their occupation, whichever is higher.
Different salary rules may apply depending on the occupation code. For nurses and several regulated healthcare positions, the required salary is linked to the relevant national pay scale.
Applicants should not assess eligibility using the annual salary alone. Working hours, occupation code, pay band, and applicable going rate must also be reviewed.
Visa Fees and Financial Requirements
The current application fees are:
- Up to three years: £324 per applicant
- More than three years: £628 per applicant
Applicants must normally show at least £1,270 in personal savings. The money must generally have been held for 28 consecutive days unless the sponsoring employer confirms that it will cover the applicant’s initial expenses.
Unlike applicants under many other UK visa categories, eligible Health and Care Worker Visa holders and their qualifying dependants do not have to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Can Nurses Bring Their Families?
Eligible nurses, doctors and other qualifying healthcare professionals may be able to bring their partner and children to the UK as dependants.
The additional maintenance funds are generally:
- £285 for a partner
- £315 for the first child
- £200 for each additional child
Each dependant must submit an application and pay the relevant visa fee.
Different restrictions apply to care workers and senior care workers. Dependants are normally allowed only in limited circumstances, including where the main applicant has been continuously employed in the UK under the relevant route since before 11 March 2024.

Criminal record certificates may be required from more than one country, depending on the applicant’s age and residence history.
Application Process From the UAE
A typical application journey involves the following stages:
1. Confirm your professional eligibility
Review your qualifications, professional licence, experience, and intended UK occupation code.
2. Begin the relevant UK registration process
Nurses should begin their NMC registration and English language preparation as early as possible.
3. Secure an eligible job offer
The employer must hold a valid Home Office sponsor licence and offer a role that meets the applicable occupation and salary requirements.
4. Obtain a Certificate of Sponsorship
The employer will issue an electronic Certificate of Sponsorship containing the information required for the visa application.
5. Prepare the supporting documents
Check English evidence, financial records, police clearance certificates and any documents required for accompanying family members.
6. Submit the visa application
Applications are completed online. Applicants may also need to attend a visa application centre to provide biometric information.
A decision is normally issued within three weeks after the applicant has completed the identity and document requirements, although complex applications can take longer.

Applying for closed care worker positions
Overseas applications for care worker and senior care worker roles are no longer available under this route.
Accepting offers from unapproved employers
A job offer is not sufficient unless the employer holds a valid sponsor licence.

A DHA, DOH or MOH licence can support an applicant’s professional profile, but it does not replace NMC or other UK regulatory registration.
Ignoring the occupation code
